March 30, 2017 is a date that marks a new era in astronautics. For the first time an orbital class rocket booster was successfully reused. Of course, we are talking about SpaceX and his ingenious creator Elon Musk (Paypal, Teslamotor, Solar City, Halcyon Molecular, Hyperloop). During the mission called SeS10 concerning the geostationary orbiting of a Luxembourg telecommunications satellite (5,300 Kg.) the Falcon 9, formerly used for the ISS Space Station’s CRS8 mission, has led to over 100 km Of the satellite (and its second stage) and then dropped back to the ground after about 8 minutes and landed successfully on the ASDS Marine Platform. Many Falcon 9 boosters has already been recovered during the various missions, but this recovery marks a breakthrough in commercial launches. The recovery of the first stage and its re-use will greatly reduce costs of spatial missions strongly penalized by having to always use a new launcher, that is the most expensive component of a mission. In fact, Musk has already recovered several Fairings (the protective shells that contain the satellites to be orbited) and it’s not excluded that you try to recover (and reuse) the second stage making the Falcon 9 completely reusable!
